THE PRACTICE OF COUNCIL is the core of TOF's programs and its work in the world. We offer Council trainings - for teachers, business people, families, couples, therapists, and other individuals - several times a year. Currently, our training sequence in Council consists of four workshops: (For our current up to date list of trainings in The Way of Council jump straight to our "Council Calendar" page).

Council I : Introduction to Council - In addition to providing participants with a direct experience of the Council process, this workshop includes training in:
  • establishing the setting for Council sessions
  • basic guidelines of the process
  • different forms of Council
  • the role of the Council facilitator in witnessing

Council II : Deepening the Practice - This training is for teachers and other facilitators of youth and adult groups who lead Councils and who wish to deepen their skills in using the process. The focus of this workshop is that of learning to work with the 'shadow' - facilitating challenging groups and using Council to explore aspects of individual and group dynamics that often remain buried and unseen.

Council III : Becoming a Carrier of Council - This advanced training is for experienced Council facilitators who are ready to embrace the Way of Council as an integral part of their professional and personal lives. The emphasis of this training is that of learning to skillfully serve as a witness to the process of both self and others, simultaneously. Participants will have the opportunity to lead Council as part of the training.

Council IV : Applications in Therapeutic Settings - This course is designed for Marriage and Family Therapists, Clinical Social Workers, and other mental health counselors and caregivers who have prior group facilitation experience. Participants will explore applications for use with individuals, couples, families, and groups, and will learn how to initiate the process and help clients continue the work in the home and other settings. Participants will gain sufficient understanding and skill to be able to directly integrate Council into their ongoing practice, as well as gain self-care benefits for themselves.

Each of the above courses meet the qualifications for 18 hours of continuing education credits for MFTs and/or LCSWs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.
