This month we are excited to welcome the Spirituality Mind Body Institute (SMBI) of Teachers College, Columbia University to the west coast for a retreat to connect with the land and seasons March 18-20, coinciding with the Equinox. Lisa Miller, Ph.D. is the Executive Director of SMBI and will be the professor on-site. Students from all over the world will come together on our Land Sanctuary to engage in council practices, nature-based ceremonies, and teachings from the rich history of The Ojai Foundation, designed to introduce SMBI to practices that foster connection to self, others, and the natural world.

Many of you know that The Ojai Foundation began in 1975 as Human Dimensions Institute/West, a nonprofit organization dedicated to exploring the interface between science and spirituality by providing a communal space for scholars to present their teachings. Now, over 40 years later, we remain committed to that mission. SMBI is the first Ivy League program to grant a degree at both the masters and doctoral level in psychology with an emphasis in spirituality, offering graduate student training in both the science and practice of spirituality within psychotherapy, meditation, wellness practices and mind-body work, as well as the arts. During this retreat participants will learn the potency of dissolving the barriers between teachers and students through the council practice, just as our original faculty did in the 1980s.

Following the retreat there will be an additional series of follow up sessions online for interested students to integrate the experience into ongoing personal and professional life. We hope the timeless wisdom learned in Ojai serves the timely action of service in the global community. As The Ojai Foundation continues to spread its knowledge and intention, we express deep gratitude to all the teachers from our past, present, and future who dedicate their lives to fostering meaningful connections. We are excited for this new, cross-country relationship to unfold and look forward to supporting the SMBI faculty and students as their program continues to develop.
