What is Council?

Council is a practice of speaking and listening from the heart. Through compassionate, heartfelt expression and empathic, non-judgmental listening, Council inspires a non-hierarchical form of deep communication that reveals a group's vision and purpose.

Council offers effective means of working with conflict and discovering the deeper, often unexpressed needs of individuals and organizations. Council, in its various forms, provides comprehensive and powerful practices for co-visioning. learning, healing, community building and making decisions in a group context. Council explores both our personal and our collective story.

Today the practice of Council is the core of The Ojai Foundation's programs in schools and in our peace and reconciliation work abroad. It is the major component of our youth and adult outreach to both public and private schools, agencies, organizations and businesses.  Council is utilized by the Foundation staff, board and community regularly, both personally and professionally.

The Ojai Foundation is the home of the Center for Council Training, devoted to supporting the practice of Council, the growing network of carriers of The Way of Council in the world and a wide variety of council trainings and programs. CCT offers a three-part training arc which constitutes the basic curriculum for council facilitators: "Council Training 1: Introduction to Council," "Council Training 2: Deepening the Practice" and "Council Training 3: Living the Way of Council."  To explore which Council Training may be right for you, click here.
